about

Originally released in 1991 on France’s legendary indie rock label New Rose, 'Kneel to the Rising Sun' spotlights some of Gammage’s best compositions and performances.

Gammage’s vocals and guitar work are excellent throughout. His guitar playing shows an element of tasteful refinement and restraint. The songs share elements of blues and folk with strong melodies and lyrics.

Kicking off the album is “Shed My Skin” a catchy song about renewal and personal rebirth. Other standouts are “Season of Rage”, “Through My Window”, and the Fred Neil classic “Everybody’s Talking At Me”.

The band’s musicianship overall is stellar and features some of the best New York based players from that era. Marc Jeffrey (Band of Outsiders, Playtime) contributes guitar and slide guitar, Vinny DeNunzio (Feelies, Richard Hell, Health and Happiness Show) plays percussion and harmonica, Dave Kaufman (The Nails) is on keyboards, D. Lee (Band of Outsiders) is on bass, and Phil’s band mate from the Corvairs, Martin Blazy joins in to play percussion and drums.

Track Name: Shed My Skin
I’ve done so much that I can regret, the best I can do is try to forget
Gonna shed my skin and get my second wind

I’m gonna burn my old memories those that seemed like a weight to me
Gonna shed my skin and get my second wind

I’m looking forward to the next sunny day
I’ll play my cards however they lay
Seems like I’ve been in trouble for so long

I’m gonna play it like a lizard man, change my colors like a chameleon
Gonna shed my skin and get my second wind

Time for me to jump back into the race, I can finally look myself in the face
Gonna shed my skin and get my second wind

I’m looking forward to the next sunny day
I’ll play my cards however they lay
Seems like I’ve been in trouble for so long

Add it all up I’m still in once piece, got bounced around but landed on my feet

Gonna shed my skin and get my second wind
Track Name: Painting of John
On my wall there’s a picture hanging before me
What goes on, in my mind as I look before me

A painting of John, on black velvet it’s John
Staring back at me, it’s gotta be John

Sunny Dallas day, shots rang out on a downtown street
His car sped away, John’s fate he went off to meet

A painting of John, on black velvet it’s John
Staring back at me, it’s gotta be John

Hey it’s not like he died for my sins, somebody’s bullet’s what did him in
after all these years a black cloud hangs over his head
They say Lee Harvey pulled the trigger if that’s what you believe then go and figure
cause we’ll never know what Lee Harvey would have said

On my wall a picture of a man who died too young
On my wall, we’ll never know just what he’d of done

A painting of John, on black velvet it’s John
Staring back at me, it’s gotta be John
Track Name: Through My Window
Oh can’t get any sleep tonight
All I see are bright lights
Shining through my window

Oh tonight the city’s on fire
I’m feeling like a live wire
Just like I’ve got to rumble

Stripped down and I’m itching to fly, a hot number that ain’t no lie
I feel the energy starting to grow, just looking through my window

Oh watching the traffic flow
Where it goes I don’t know
Watching through my window

Oh hear the sound of the surf
Yeah the beach is my turf
And tonight it calls me

Oh it’s not just another night
The waves are breaking just right
And tonight they call me
Through my window…….
