Uptown, downtown, all around Yeah I work and slave all day just to bring home some dough When the moneys all been spent I need just a little bit more But when the sun goes down I feel set free It brings out the night crawler in me Uptown, downtown, all around I go to my wardrobe and get dressed up in my threads Then in front of the mirror slick up the hair on head When I walk out the door I’m feeling fine I’m looking sharp in some mighty fine vines Uptown, downtown, all around My first stop is a joint called “Charlies” it’s my favorite place to go Then a drink at the “Five Spot” maybe a couple of more I’m steppin’ out to do a little dancing And if I’m lucky a little romancing Uptown, downtown, all around I’m in love with the city, I feel it’s energy flow through my veins You can keep your country living for me it’s just not the same I’m steppin’ out to do a little dancing And if I’m lucky a little romancing Uptown, downtown, all around

I think we can make it just watch you’ll see I think we can make it please believe in me More than anything in the whole wide world we wanted to touch the sky Our love can get through anything we never will be denied I think we can make it so far, so fast I think we can make it our love’s got to last It’s gonna be a struggle every step of the way Nothing good come’s easy, not matter what people say I think we can make it Just watch you’ll see I think we can make it out of the darkness and into the light I think we can make it our love has climed new heights Give an inch we’ll take a mile just give us one more chance The flamingo birds are shouting lullibies in honor of our romance yea, yea, yea, yea, yea I think we can make it little girl

Baby left and ran into the night Was it something I said? We never used to fight Come back baby, let me love you again I can’t think straight now that she’s gone My whole life’s a mess everything’s gone wrong Come back baby, let me love you again Race with the wind Come back baby, let me love you again I hold that woman close in my dreams Then I wake up and it’s not like it seems Come back baby, let me love you again Let me open my eyes and see you at my door I’ll make things right just like they were before Come back baby, let me love you again

Hazy streetlights took my woman downtown Hazy streetlights I’m alone and feeling down Five o’clock in the morning and the night’s fading into day She said she’d see me at six that’s one of her tricks I believed every word she said Can’t have no woman cheating on me I’ll get even just you see Hazy streetlights took my woman downtown Hazy streetlights she thinks she can two time me Hazy streetlights she’s nothing but a brazen hussy I’ve been up all night drinking and my angst has turned into rage She ain’t no saint that’s not my only complaint I believed every word she said Can’t have no woman cheating on me I’ll get even just you see Hazy streetlights took my woman downtown Hazy streetlights I’ll mix her favorite drink Hazy streetlights I love her that’s what she’ll think Then when she’s not looking I’ll pour a surprise in her glass I went and bought me some poison, it’s strong and it will last Can’t have no woman cheating on me I’ll get even just you see Hazy streetlights took my woman downtown Hazy streetlights

I’ll wait here and rest my mind, all I’ve got is a lot of time Hey Bartender! Give me a shot of your very best when I die I’ll take a rest Buy the bar another round We’re celebrating and slamming ‘em down No light weights allowed in here So pour the whisky, wine, and beer

You’re a travelin’ gal with your microphone One day you’re here, the next day you’re gone Going back to St. Louie cause this time we’re through I followed you up to Chicago town Only problem was you weren’t around Going back to St. Louie cause this time we’re through You really tuned my engine you had me purring like a cat I turned around and you’d left me – where’s that at? where’s that at? Woke up this morning feeling sad and blue I loved you so much what can I do? Going back to St. Louie cause this time we’re through Going back to St. Louie I’ve had enough of you I hear you’re steppin’ out all over town Singing those songs with the jazzy sounds Going back to St. Louie cause this time we’re through Going back to St. Louie I’ve had enough of you

about

Riding the crest of the late 1990s swing music renaissance, The Scarlet Dukes emerged as the most original of the east coast neo-swing combos.

Featuring Phil Gammage's original songs played in their unique jump blues style, the band were regular performers at such premier live music venues as The Five Spot (Philadelphia), The Greatest Bar on Earth at Windows on the World (New York City), Leopard Lounge at Club Bene (South Amboy, NJ), and others.

Active during the years from 1998 to 2001, they recorded a five track self-titled EP, and one full-length album “Rogue Escapades” with all twelve of its songs being Gammage originals.

The group's song "In Love Again" was featured in a national Walmart commercial in 2008.

Available here is their album, along with the long-out-of-print EP (a Bandcamp bonus exclusive). The album was produced by the always brilliant Gordon Raphael (The Strokes, etc.).
